Liberation Focused Research

​Dr. Serrata is a nationally recognized researcher in the area of domestic violence and sexual assault. 
Her research includes studying the intersections of domestic violence with issues of oppression, privilege and strength in Latin@ families and communities. Recent research studies include understanding human trafficking services in the context of domestic violence, understanding the housing needs and solutions for Latin@ survivors, and the impact of culturally-specific and trauma-informed approaches on Latin@ survivors. She is particularly skilled in utilizing research as a tool for social change and partnering with practitioners to understand their work better. She is a national leader in the use of participatory research methods in the field of domestic violence and recently co-developed a toolkit for community based participatory research with survivors of violence. Dr. Serrata has dozens of published academic manuscripts and truly enjoys working with practitioners to advance the field of gender-based violence.
